The Streak Continues…

Last night at the Albany Speedway Club, Cody Turacchio (Cody Turacchio Motorsports) extended his West Coast Series win streak to eleven, taking out the twenty-five lap main event.

As part of the tracks sixtieth anniversary celebrations, the Roadline Civil Contractors West Coast Series would take the second round, proudly presented by Asteel Powdercoaters to the venue, and with this being the final chance for a hitout there prior to the State Title in April, a number of heavy hitters made the journey.

Unfortunately for a few, the night didn’t go to plan: the opening heat seeing Sam Haythornthwaite’s night over before it really began, clouting the turn three wall and rolling heavily, while one of the other pre-race favourites in state champion Rhys Cumming (RJC Motorsport) also had a tough start, unable to rejoin the field after the stoppage.

As if this wasn’t enough, Steven Ellement (Steven Ellement Motorsport), who was leading the opening heat after the stoppage, also blew up, a plume of smoke billowing out the back of his #2 entry and ending his night early.

History shows that Glenn Carstairs went on to win that opening heat, with Turacchio claiming the second. Carstairs returned to the winners’ circle in heat three while it looked like Turacchio would do the same in heat four only to be relegated after the race and handing Brendon Marshman (Opal Finance F500 Racing) the final heat win.

Local hero Shane Devonshire (Chasing the Track) would take the win in the Mid Pack dash while Turacchio bounced back to take the top six dash and set up a pole position start in the final alongside Marshman.

Marshman would get the nose in front as the feature race went green, but it didn’t take long for Turacchio to move by and take over the point while Carstairs also fought hard to get by Marshman temporarily only for Marshman to motor back on by.

Marshman then pulled clear of Carstairs and set out after Turacchio, right on his tail for a number of laps, but ultimately unable to make a move.

The rest of the field began to spread out, though WA champion Cumming bounced back from his earlier issues to work his way through the field, passing plenty of cars.

The yellows came out with eight laps remaining as Jack Paterson spun to a stop in turn four, bunching the field up for a restart, and despite challenging hard, Marshman was unable to make a move, while Cumming was able to advance another couple of spots to move into the top five.

In the end though Turacchio put in another faultless drive to take the win, crossing the line ahead of Marshman, Carstairs, David Sinagra (Sinagra Motorsport) and Cumming.

Teams now have only a few days to reset with a double header coming up this weekend: the second of the Fast Fridays at the Motorplex on Friday night followed by the annual King of Wings event the very next night!
